Frequently Asked Questions

How can I keep my energy bills low without sacrificing comfort?

One of the best ways to cut monthly energy costs is to ensure that your system is running at peak efficiency through keeping up with routine maintenance (like changing air filters and prioritizing yearly service). Some homeowners may even benefit from updating their HVAC equipment to higher efficiency models. Of course, homeowners should always consider factors specific to their homes such as proper insulation and windows!

What’s the best way to improve air quality in my home?

Reasons to improve indoor air quality can range from having children and pets in your home to having medical needs such as allergies, breathing difficulties, or simply waking up with a dry throat or nose bleeds in the winter. Whatever the cause, there are plenty of options for homeowners to choose from when it comes to prioritizing the safety and comfort of their air quality! Diligently changing air filters, upgrading your filter cabinet, adding in-duct whole home air purifiers, utilizing electronic air purifiers, and considering installing a humidifier and/or dehumidifier are all recommended solutions.

Is routine maintenance really THAT important?

In one simple word: YES! Routine maintenance for your heating and cooling systems can catch inexpensive, minor problems before they turn into expensive, major problems down the line. Keeping up with yearly service is also a major element in making sure that your systems are running as efficiently as possible— which keeps more money in your pocket month after month.

How often should my systems receive maintenance?

Both heating and cooling systems should each receive maintenance service once a year. We recommend heating systems to be checked out sometime in the fall or winter, while cooling systems should be looked over in the spring or summer.

Is there an ideal temperature to keep my thermostat set to?

While the ideal temperature for your home really just depends on personal comfort, we recommend, based on governmental efficiency standards, keeping it in the range of 70°F - 78°F year round. We encourage you to experiment with adjusting your home’s temperature to see what is most comfortable for your family and your finances.

How long should I expect my systems to last?

A well maintained furnace can be expected to last 15-20 years or longer. A well maintained air conditioner can be expected to last 12-17 years or longer. A well maintained heat pump can be expected to last 10-16 years or longer. We often see equipment lasting as long as the higher range estimates (and well beyond!) as long as proper maintenance and care are taken with the equipment.

What are the benefits of high efficiency air filters?

High efficiency air filters need changed less often and put less stress on your system. They have more surface area and can catch more contaminates than standard air filters— which is a great advantage when it comes to improving indoor air quality.

How often should I be changing my air filters anyway?

Generally, an air filter with 1” thickness should be changed every 30 days. A 4-5” filter will need replaced every 6-12 months and sometimes a little more frequently depending on your home’s unique situation (dogs, cats, smoke, etc.). An electronic air cleaner has an estimated life of about 7 years as long as the washable filters inside are cleaned every month.
